Centre Managers – Senior Tutors

Jonny Channon, Belmont Centre Manager

From a very young age Jonny spent most of his spare time outdoors whether playing in rivers, pushing his bike to the top of steep hills and riding back down, or climbing trees, and this led to a strong belief in experiential learning as this was the way he learned growing up.  If it hurts it’s probably best not to do it again.

It wasn’t until he volunteered for the Princes Trust 2009 that he started to pursue a career in Outdoor Education. Since then he has worked in Scotland and France, instructing various outdoor sports such as rocking climbing, canoeing and skiing. In 2012 he started studying Outdoor Education and achieved a BA (hons) degree in 2015. For someone who has never been very academic this was a huge achievement. While working and studying in the outdoors Jonny has had the opportunity to undertake a variety of different outdoor sports in England, France, USA and Spain.  However he still feels his best adventures have been in Scotland; whether canoeing the lochs and rivers, canyoning in the Highlands or mountaineering.  Scotland has a lot to offer anyone who is keen for an adventure.

Jonny enjoys coaching and sharing experiences with others.  He feels that encouraging people to move out of their comfort zones can be a great way of developing their own abilities – and the outdoors is a great place to do this.
